Emmett Shear writes on X (formerly Twitter) that he received a call today encouraging him to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to become the temporary CEO of OpenAI. “After discussing it with his family and giving it some thought, he decided to accept.”

Emmett Shear co-founded the Justin.tv website, which later evolved into Twitch, and quit as CEO of the streaming network earlier this year. He is taking over as acting CEO of OpenAI during a difficult time for the company. After Sam Altman was abruptly fired on Friday, For a brief period, Mira Murati, the chief technical officer of OpenAI, served as acting CEO. Several OpenAI staff members publicly expressed their support for Altman as he was negotiating his possible reinstatement with the OpenAI board.

Now, over a year after ChatGPT launched, Emmett Shear assumes control of OpenAI in a significant reorganization. Shear clarifies, “I took this job because I think OpenAI is one of the most important companies in existence right now.” When the board asked him to take on the role and told him of the circumstances, he stated he didn’t make the decision lightly. Ultimately, he believed it was his duty to help if he could.

Emmett Shear’s statement was much the same as Microsoft’s, which reiterated that the collaboration with OpenAI is still in place. Shear said that they still have a great working relationship with Microsoft and that in the next few weeks, they will be concentrating on ensuring that the business keeps offering top-notch customer support to all of our clients. Shear stated that employees at OpenAI are exceptionally exceptional and devoted to their goals, as one might anticipate. In addition, the way Sam was fired and the conversations that followed were handled horribly, which has seriously damaged our trust.

It won’t be simple to resolve the unrest at OpenAI, especially since Altman and Brockman have both joined Microsoft, a significant investor that is said to hold a 49 percent stake in the company. Shear now intends to engage a third-party investigator to produce a report on the events that preceded Altman’s termination. In the next 30 days, he also intends to restructure OpenAI’s leadership and management teams in response to possible resignations from the company’s executives and staff.

Shear declares: The stability and prosperity of OpenAI are too vital to allow unrest to upset them in this manner. He said that he will try to address the main issues as well, even though he believes that in many cases, real progress may take longer than a month.
